i am not able to see the fav icon in IE and also only in the tabbed heading in firefox
please help me
Vlasta (2005-10-15 00:00:00): I have checked your site and the favicon is showing without problems in both IE and Firefox on my computer. Did you try all the hints given above? Especially adding the page to favorites and clearing IE cache before.
Unknown author (2005-10-17 00:00:00): Hi,
I have performed all the steps regarding the FAVICON to be displayed in the IE. But it is not getting displayed.
Vlasta (2005-10-17 00:00:00): Well, your web site is OK, the problem is with your computer. Here are some more extreme recommendations: change your default browser to IE, delete all bookmarks to your site, clear IE cache, history folder, and recycle bin, restart computer, bookmark your page and then click a few times on the bookmark.
Unknown author (2005-11-02 00:00:00): This Favicon things is quite silly on internet explorer.
One thing you can do, if you want the icon to be visible in your explorer, do like you do when you make a shortcut to a page on you desktop but drag the URL (or rather the little e-icon nex to the adress) to the internet explorer window itself so that it reloads the page.
Do that twice.
Suddenly the icon is visible.
Reloading alone does not cut it.
Considering that it was internet explorer that came up with this thing with an icon its really super-silly that it works fantasticly on Firefox...
Unknown author (2005-11-20 00:00:00): thanks so much
Unknown author (2005-11-27 00:00:00): Favicon can also be used in the latest Firefox to display a .gif file and hence a moving icon!
make sure you put in two of the favicon generators as follows:
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon2.ICO">
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon.gif">
IE selects the .ico file and firefox displays the moving.gif!

Vlasta (2005-11-27 00:00:00): Thanks for the info about animated favicons.
geofgibson (2005-11-28 00:00:00): I can't get IE to show my favicon. It shows up in Safari and Firefox with no problem. I've tried the various steps recommended, but to no avail.

geofgibson (2005-11-28 00:00:00): Of course, now that I've refreshed the page 2 dozen or so times, the favicon now shows up!
F^&*$^&&! windows...
Unknown author (2005-12-05 00:00:00): I wasn't aware of Fx being able to show gif instead of ico... good to know. Now if I can just figure out how to make my idea look good at such a small size I'm all set!
Laurent (2005-12-19 00:00:00): Sorry I did try all the paths above and read all the comments but still cant get it shown in ie in my website
http://www.accro-web.com
maybe it does show but not in my computer?
Can someone help me :) ?
thx in advance

Vlasta (2005-12-20 00:00:00): Your favicon is a renamed BMP. While Firefox understands it, IE requires a real Windows icon.
Unknown author (2005-12-24 00:00:00): thanx a lot Vlasta, you seem to be right and I'll change it (in fact it's a renamed .png)
Unknown author (2006-01-02 00:00:00): ?
Unknown author (2006-01-02 00:00:00): This page was very helpful! I've been looking everywhere to find out how to get an 'icon'... (didn't even know what it was called!) but now I have one working... if only all browers showed the animated one!
Unknown author (2006-01-02 00:00:00): checkout crunkedout.com and see if you can see the animated one or the still one...
Vlasta (2006-01-02 00:00:00): Firefox show the animated one there
Unknown author (2006-01-05 00:00:00): Thanks alot, people like this make the web go around =)
tpkyteroo (2006-01-31 00:00:00): I can not get the link to work on my site and I do use Mozilla Firefox. I tried using an ico file and a gif file. I changed the href different ways and it still does not work. Could it be that the server that hosts my site needs to allow one to use this feature? This does not make sense to me, but I can't imagine what I could possibly be doing wrong. The java script console just gives me my css errors. Thanks!
tpkyteroo (2006-01-31 00:00:00): I got it to work by using the gif file with the full url address to the image. I realized that I tried the full url address with the ico file instead of the gif file. Either my host does not support ico files, or the program I used does not allow ico files to actually work in a trial version.
Thanks!!!!
sHasHaNk kuMAr (2006-02-16 00:00:00): my favicon doesn't seem to work either! do help me out some 1!

Vlasta (2006-02-17 00:00:00): You need to specify the icon in a top level frame, which probably is not under your control on geocities.
pharius (2006-05-05 00:00:00): Great guide! I made a favicon for my site and it works fine in Firefox and IE7 but not in IE6. I tried adding the page to favorites and it shows there but not in the address bar. I also deleted all of my temp internet files but still no luck. Do you have any other suggedtions?
Unknown author (2006-05-09 00:00:00): Hi, I added this text on my html page.. but IE7 still doesn't show the favicon.ico.
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />
I'm running this locally,
I'm using apache 2.0 and PHP 4.4.2
Works great in Mozilla Firefox, Opera 8.54, Netscape 8.0.4. I also did all the things that you said.
Please help.. Thanks.
Vlasta (2006-05-09 00:00:00): Try using absolute path. For IE6, the icon should be in the webserver root (http://localhost/favicon.ico). Also, it could be incorrect icon format.

The Pirate (2006-05-18 00:00:00): Hey - wow - i thought this one was gonna be the fix! \
But that damned little square still won't load ... i've included the code but its still not getting picked up (www.illfm.net) and the icon is in the top level and inside the main site folder.
Any more suggestions ?
nikko (2006-05-24 00:00:00): Even Google does not show its favicon in IE so what chance have we???
Unknown author (2006-05-26 00:00:00): nikko is right...
the favicon does not show in IE!
all fine with FF.
IE su**!
Unknown author (2006-06-01 00:00:00): Thanks for your suggestions on the installation of Favicon.
However, I tried all your fixes for IE and after much aggrevation I got the icon for your site and for my site to show both in the address line and in the bookmarks for IE v6. However, as soon as I close the IE browser and open it again I lose my icon, AND the favicon for your site in both the address line and the bookmarks.
Firefox, opera, and Netscape all took the favicon just fine.
Thanks,

Unknown author (2006-06-29 00:00:00): For who can't display favicon on IE.
Try this:
Go to tools> internet options> advanced> navigation> activate personalized "favorite" menu.
I've tried this and it's working good now.
But still I have to add the page to favorites to display the favicon.
Good luck.
kathiek (2006-07-12 00:00:00): I have successfully posted a favicon at www.firstnemo.org - is there a way for it to show up in the Title bar at the top of the browser (and not just in the URL address bar)? I tried to add an image tag as part of the title but that didn't work.
Vlasta (2006-07-12 00:00:00): AFAIK it is not possible with current browsers.
MrBernard (2006-07-18 00:00:00): It seems to me that IE 6 only adds favicon for bookmarked pages. So if your site is dynamic then one would have to add bookmarks for all pages... You can easily test this with for instance Wikipedia. Firefox works like a dream...
Unknown author (2006-08-03 00:00:00): mine shows up in my favorites.. it has both the 16x16 and a 32x32 in the ico file... shows in fav list and when browsing the fav folder it shows the big one... but does not show in the address bar... winxp, ie6
Unknown author (2006-10-05 00:00:00): To get this to work with IE 6, make sure a 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 in the ico file. I tried all kinds of tricks to get it to show, but that was the only thing that worked.
Unknown author (2006-10-11 00:00:00): it's fine
sbmkrishna (2006-10-18 00:00:00): My IE browser is not showing the favicon.ico. If i open like www.softcrylic.com/favicon.ico, the browser is not showing the icon. I even tried Go to tools> internet options> advanced> navigation> activate personalized "favorite" menu. But its not working. I think if i can dispaly that icon in the browser, then it works in the address bar. So please help me what should i do to display that icon in the browser
Vlasta (2006-10-18 00:00:00): Your favicon is a PNG image, not a real icon. While Firefox accepts any image format, you need a proper .ico file for IE.
sisam (2006-10-21 00:00:00): I tried everything suggested above to see the favicon in IE but it is not working. www.nazaydemir.com is the website... it is working perfectly in firefox....
Unknown author (2006-10-22 00:00:00): I tryed the code but supose doenst work whitout a webpage
Unknown author (2006-10-27 00:00:00): I am trying to add a favicon to my site, but I want to test it first to make sure that it works. Does this code work - <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico"> or do I need to direct it to my site somewhere for example <link rel="shortcut icon" href="www.example.com/images/favicon.ico">
Vlasta (2006-10-29 00:00:00): The first version is correct. If you want your favicon to be shown in IE6, it must be in the root of your site and called exactly favicon.ico
Dave (2006-10-30 00:00:00): Thank you for responding Vlasta but it is still not working, <link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/favicon.ico"> I have it 16x16 the correct code, not sure what to do from here, any suggestions?
Vlasta (2006-10-30 00:00:00): You should use absolute path - that is including the leading slash. And you should place it to the root directory, not to any subdirectory. Otherwise it would not work with IE6. Other than that, I would suggest to read the previous comments.
SeattleRetro (2006-11-11 00:00:00): Just want to say thanks for your site--I was able to get the icon working for IE6 finally.
For those who have Photoshop, there was a free plug-in to do .ico files. I used the 16x16 size.
And I notice here on this site you used a relative (vs. absolute) placement for your .ico file--and sure enough, it shows in Firefox, but not in IE6!
manzanofab (2006-11-21 00:00:00): Hi my name is fabian i dont know what happen with the ie my favicon.ico is in the root file, and it works with the opera but it does not work in the ie what could be the problem,
i made the favicon in fireworks and in dreamweaver i change the .jpg to .ico
i dont know if this could be the problem
please heeeellllppp me
thanks
Vlasta (2006-11-22 00:00:00): Favicon should (and in case of IE must) be an .ico file. It is not enough to rename a .jpg to .ico.
Unknown author (2006-11-26 00:00:00): Wow
Girish (2006-11-29 00:00:00): I had added the give statement in the head section of my web page. It is working all fine in Mozilla but not working on Internet Explorer. Though I have IE6 but it is not working. I had also tried to add the page as favourite but still it is showing the IE icon
Vlasta (2006-11-30 00:00:00): There are more hints in the comment section, but usually this kind of problem is caused by slow refresh of IE.
DiverFrank (2006-12-02 00:00:00): Hi
After creating my favicon and following your instructions it still does not appear. Our home page uses frames and I have inserted the line of code in the frames page and also both pages that are shown in the frames any suggestions?
Vlasta (2006-12-02 00:00:00): I have checked your site and it seems that you have not uploaded the favicon ;-). It should be accessible at www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico
DiverFrank (2006-12-03 00:00:00): Hi
The icon file had the extension in upper case, forgot that Linux is case sensitive, the favicon is however still not coming up when I open internet explorer (version 7) any more help would be appreciated
Thanks
Vlasta (2006-12-04 00:00:00): Works all right from my computer in both IE6 and IE7. One minor thing - your icon is 32x32 pixels, you should add a 16x16 format.
TomasV (2006-12-04 00:00:00): I can't get this working again using IE7. Firefox is all good. ico created using photoshop plug-in. 16x16pix 400bytes.
www.martinassociates.co.uk
Vlasta (2006-12-05 00:00:00): use rel="shortcut icon", not just rel="icon" and use absolute path to the icon ... href="/favicon.ico" <- just like in the example in the article
Unknown author (2006-12-07 00:00:00): My icon is not showing. Any help would be appreciated. It shows in Mozilla no problem, but not in any version of IE. The URL is http://tesolarabia.org

Vlasta (2006-12-10 00:00:00): both bikini2990.net and appliedintegrity.us favicons show without problems from here.
blakenewman-com (2006-12-10 00:00:00): It works when I type blakenewman.com but does not when I type www.blakenewman.com. Is that a matter of my cache or my temporary internet files?
Vlasta (2006-12-10 00:00:00): works for both addresses for me, BUT: favicon should be 16x16 pixels - yours has all but this format and a file length of over 350kB!
Vivid (2006-12-18 00:00:00): www.vividbroadcast.co.uk has an icon that works fine in anything but IE. in IE6 it appears in the favorites when added but not in the URL bar.
Vlasta (2006-12-19 00:00:00): After you add it to favorites in IE6 and click on that link in favorites, it will show in address bar. But only for that single page.
UKuser (2006-12-19 00:00:00): Hi. Done all you have said and I can't seem to view the favicon? My URL is www.directsubmit.co.uk Any ideas?

Vlasta (2006-12-20 00:00:00): www.directsubmit.co.uk and www.advantageofficesuites.com work without problems. Favicon at alchristian.com should only contain 16x16 pixel images.

Wheatworks (2006-12-27 00:00:00): I find it actually takes two lines in the page headers to make a favicon work well across all browsers:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.wheatworks.com/favicon.ico">
<link rel="icon" type="image/ico" href="http://www.wheatworks.com/favicon.ico">
Perhaps this will help those with problems in certain browsers.

Unknown author (2006-12-27 00:00:00): Mine won't work on IE 7.0
GoldDog (2006-12-30 00:00:00): Wheatworks, I added your extra tag, but IE 6 still continues to ignore my favicon. Any other workarounds exist for IE?
Vlasta (2006-12-31 00:00:00): The two lines are not necessary unless you want to use different favicons in IE and Firefox. The rel="icon" line is ignored by IE and only affects Firefox.
If you are having problems in IE6, check you page from another computer. It is usually only a caching issue.
Unknown author (2007-01-02 00:00:00): I am using IE6. I tried all above said tricks. But the icon is showing in Favorites list only and not in Address Bar. It is working find in Firefox.

Melusine (2007-01-09 00:00:00): Not the answer I had hoped for :-( Especially since all other websites show up with the favicon, just my own is not working regardless of what I do.

I'm confused; how are they doing it? :0 I'm unable to get it to work for www.icedpitamusiclessons.com by the way. :(
Vlasta (2007-01-19 00:00:00): Sometimes browsers just use for favicon.ico from the root directory. And your site works OK.
Tysonjm (2007-01-19 00:00:00): Sorry, not sure why my previous post reposted itself. Funny, you're seeing my site work OK with the favicon. I've tried it on 5 computers now with different versions of IE to no avail. Very strange!
Vlasta (2007-01-20 00:00:00): I have opened it in IE6, added to bookmarks and favicon appeared... Then after a click on the bookmark it also showed in address bar as it should.
Tysonjm (2007-01-21 00:00:00): Thanks, I did finally get IE6 to work only after adding to bookmarks. IE7 still doesn't, however. I still wonder though how these sites do it, that I've never been to before, much less bookmarked. Like yours, it loaded upon my first visit in IE7! Why's it work?
Tysonjm (2007-01-21 00:00:00): Fixed it by adding: type="image/x-icon" to the line. So, <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">

The favicon never sticks with IE 7 on this site. I've tried all the different tags, just nothing, all is well in Mozialla. It creases me, I duplictaed everything here perfectly, cleared the cache, used and absolute url, modidifed the tag from above, added the (space)/> at the end of the tag for xhtml, still nothing. Any ideas?
Vlasta (2007-01-31 00:00:00): The problem is in your favicon.ico file - it is a renamed gif image and IE requires a real .ico format.
paradox (2007-01-31 00:00:00): Thank you so much, I appreciate it. I apologize for the triple comment post, I didn't realize a refresh was re-posting.
Again, bless you for the answer. Thank you.
paradox (2007-01-31 00:00:00): I am not really sure what a "real" ico format is, other than re-naming it. Photoshop doesn't recognize ico files, and I could only work with the jpg that was given to me.
Okay, unclear on the concept, it's not exactly a new experience for me in this life. Go to those sites that generate this ico file for you, since you can't do it. I did. I replaced it on the server twice and it still won't show in IE.
In interviewing for a Manager job so I can flee IE. It's not worth it in this life. Anything further you can suggest, thank you very much, I'm not stressing. It's a bona fide ico on the root, still klunks.
Vlasta (2007-01-31 00:00:00): I have checked the site from IE6 and it seems to work fine. It is probably just a caching issue on your computer.
gf (2007-02-01 00:00:00): Sharan: Hi, as discussed in the forum,
I added the favicon.ico in to my Tomcat web server (ROOT Folder). Is this enough to make the favicon work for all the pages?
My requirement is to have the little icon on the address bar without bookmarking the page. We cannot request the user to bookmark to see our company icon. How do I force this to happen with out bookmark? Our application has around 50 jsp files. Should I had <LINK> element in all the jsp files. Please help me out. Thanks, Sharan.
pc (2007-02-01 00:00:00): Hi,
the icon just won't show up in front of the address for IE7. It does on Firefox and Safari. But none of them displayed the icons when I saved them as favorite or saved it as shortcut on my desktop. Can you please help me out? www.apcommerce.net
Thanks!
Patricia
Vlasta (2007-02-01 00:00:00):
Sharan: you should add the <link ... - it does not maater what technology you use on the server. And for IE6 susers must add the page to favorites, for other browsers, the icon shows just by visiting the page.
Patricia: Your favicon works in IE7, it just takes a more time to display, because there is relatively lot of data on your page.

Vlasta (2007-02-03 00:00:00): pay4rent:

Unknown author (2007-02-04 00:00:00): hey, this is the blakesands.com poster again. Favicon is everywhere, including the root, but joomla has a special config for it, and wants it in the /images/ folder. And, TA-DA! It works for me, and I hope for you too. AGAIN, I concur... it is first a file location issue AND also a cache problem. Also, adding it to favs seems to help the icon show correctly. Thanks all for your help. I spent hours on this, only to discover from another computer that favicon shows just fine in IE on the first try.
Unknown author (2007-02-04 00:00:00): blakesands.com poster, again, here... another interesting fact. IE ignores any icon that is not 16x16 and in official ico format. Search for a free icon editor if you need to adjust size, there are lots of free and trial ico editors out there.

sonny.tee (2007-02-08 00:00:00): Hi, I feel that i've added the favicon.ico tag correctly:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
www.fordpas.org - the icon shows up in FireFox and Safari, but not in IE 6 nor 7. Do i just need to wait a bit?
I've gone over all these forums and cant find the answer. I generated the Icon using an Icon generator and it looks good in those other browers, but most of our people use IE.
Thanks a lot!

HardHead (2007-02-16 00:00:00): Sonny Tee I see the Icon just fine on your site. Looks Good
Vlasta (2007-02-16 00:00:00): There should be no problem with php. Php, like all similar technologies, just produce html code. But, of course, you have to find the right place in the script you are using.
HardHead (2007-02-16 00:00:00): LOL yea so I see but everything I have tried hasnt worked.. But I'll keep trying
Unknown author (2007-02-21 00:00:00): firefox used to display favicons just fine until the latest version (2.0.0.1) - then they showed up from other sites, but not mine, until I added the "shortcut icon" tag in the headers. Strange, because firefox never needed that before as long as favicon.ico was in the root web directory.

Unknown author (2007-04-12 00:00:00): Urm....this is embarrassing !!!!!!!!!
I just commissioned a script so viewers can go to:-
http://www.favicon.co.uk and make a favicon.ico file from
any image that they have on their computer
The script is supposed to convert the image they supply
into a favicon.ico file
In early stage of design BUT http://www.favicon.co.uk/new.html
has the necessary code and the favicon.ico file is uploaded
but....guess what...I can't see it in my favourites
I tried all the advice offered by Googling "favicon don't show"
and from this page...to no avail
Any further advice appreciated.
Secondly can somebody try the script and let me know if it works
for them (after uploading and bookmarking to your own site)
You could mail me stay[at]canastahotel.com
Thanks in advance for any useful comments
Unknown author (2007-04-12 00:00:00): Problem fixed - it was actually a problem with the script and the way it formatted the favicon.ico image - now corrected.
If anybody wants to try it out please go to: http://www.favicon.co.uk
to design your own favicon.ico file
WillowsHeart (2007-05-06 00:00:00): Hi I'm hoping you can help as I'm rather perplexed! I created a favicon, uploaded it to my root folder, inserted the link into my main index page (as in example on this page) but the icon is only showing against my 'forum' page and not the others. I can't work out why it's showing on that one page when it's not even the page I inserted the link. I'm getting really frustrated now so any help will be greatly appreciated :-) Thanks
Vlasta (2007-05-06 00:00:00): It depends on the browser you are using. Sometimes it is enough to have favicon.ico in root folder for the icon to appear, sometimes the browser does not fetch the icon, because it already has the default one cached for that page.
WillowsHeart (2007-05-06 00:00:00): I cleared my cache and hey presto its working . . thanks for your help :-)

Vlasta (2007-06-16 00:00:00): If you did not change anything then probably the cached icon on your computer was updated or dropped. Re-add it to your favorites if your are using IE6.

Vlasta (2007-07-10 00:00:00): Looks OK from here, probably just not updated cache on your computer. But you should remove the 32x32 pixel format from your favicon or at least make it similar to the 16x16 format.

Vlasta (2007-08-10 00:00:00): The online tool is good for favicons, the normal editor gives more freedom (you can for example create favicons with transparency and smooth edges). You should delete all but 16x16 images when using it for favicons.

Osaka Slim (2007-11-03 00:00:00): Last week I was tasked to "freshen up" my company's Web site. I thought this would be a great chance to learn how to put an
icon next to the address bar--something I'd wanted to do for my personal site for ages. So I checked out a few sites like this
one and soon had my company logo into a favicon file and the relevant code in the index file. I didn't want a lone graphic floating about in the root directory so put the .ico file in /graphics and added that path to the href. Worked beautifully in Opera 9.24 (my browser of choice) right off. Then I tried it in IE6. Didn't work. Firefox 1 (I keep it for testing new scripts!)--no problem. A search on "favicon in IE6" brought me here.
Now I can't be experimenting with my live company site so I switched to my personal one, which is hosted on GeoCities. I got the same result as above. First I tried moving the favicon file into the same directory as the index (and edited the href). Still no good for IE6. Then I tried everything suggested above--including the reboot! I found the source in Vlasta's site (I warmed my nose before sniffing
around!) and copied the link rel line from there. Still no good for IE6, and I agree with milongal, the "/" stopped it from working
in Opera and Firefox. The "type" (with "image/x-icon" or "image/vnd.microsoft.icon" recomended by Wikipedia) didn't help.
Then I noticed something weird in Opera and Firefox. Even though my icon shows up next to the address bar, when I bookmark my site, the icon appearing in Bookmarks is totally different to mine and nothing I recognise! Is this is because I'm on a hosted site--GeoCities are forcing an arbitrary icon of their choice on my bookmark? I checked a few other sites and all the ones that look the same next to the address bar and in bookmarks appear to have their own servers (or at least domain names) and use the simplest form of the "link" declaration.
I'm stuck and have given up for now. I've now spent more than 10 times the amount of time trying to get this to work in IE6 than it took to do in the first place! My boss and just about everyone else in my company are IE devotees so I guess no-one's going to see my work!
Sorry this has gone on too long--any helpful advice on my comments would be welcome!

Unknown author (2007-11-11 00:00:00): A solution I found was to add in the ref link the whole url address with a question mark at the end, that will tell the server to look for any change in the file everytime your page loads, that worked for me, good luck!!
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="www.website.com/favicon.ico?">
Unknown author (2007-11-17 00:00:00): I found that I had to rename my favicon to favicon1, change the code to say <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon1.ico">. That was the only way I could get it to work.
Unknown author (2007-11-17 00:00:00): Clearing the cache, deleting history, removing cookies, restarting IE7 - none of it worked.
What DID work was adding the question mark, as the UA post of 11/11/07 suggests. Works like a charm!

Unknown author (2008-02-21 00:00:00): From PCLIVE:
I view my webpage at two locations. At home my favicon always shows up. At work and another location, the favicon will not show.
Yesterday my favicon was suddenly showing at work when I added a bit of code to the end of the suggested code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
Today, I'm back to my favicon not showing again. IE7 Windows XP.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Unknown author (2008-04-22 00:00:00): Hi There
I have tried everything to make my fav icon come up on IE 6. But no luck. I have provided a hard coded path to the icon file in my Header control, added as bookmark etc after clearing previous bookmarks, Temp files etc but no luck. I noticed that when I browse to my icon file through IE and look at its properties - it shows Type: "Not Available". Is this causing the issue? Why is that? When I go to the icon file through file structure on the server and go properties - it shows it as a 16x16 .ico file. Please help. Thanks. Jatin
Unknown author (2008-04-22 00:00:00): My site experttitsolutions.biz also has the same problem of not dispalying Icon. Please suggest.
TPTech
Vlasta (2008-04-22 00:00:00): experttitsolutions.biz seems to be offline. As for the IE6 problem, make sure, the favicon.ico is really an .ico file, not just renamed .bmp, it is in the root folder and called exactly favicon.ico. You may aslo check it mime type if it is not something weird. With IE6, it is often a cache issue, try a clean computer, add your page to favorites and click it.

So in my case, it could NOT be in the root folder. Hope that helps.

I also followed the instructions on MSDN and have not yet found anything telling me how to get this to work. I cannot force people to add my page to their favorites just to see my icon. Yes, I cleared my cache, favorites, offline pages, closed IE and restarted and refreshed. I have played with MULTIPLE versions of the <LINK ...> statement and it still doesn't work. If anyone has successfully gotten this to work, without putting the full URL in the link statement (I need it dynamic so I can develop on LOCALHOST before moving to a server), I would like to hear how you did it, and I would like to see it to prove you did it (I'm a skeptic and need proof). Everything I've read says it should be working, yet it's not. No one has offered the proof by giving me a URL to look at (with the favicon in the address line) with the exact code used and instructions to get it to work. If you are just going to give me your advice, please don't respond to this, I've heard it all. I'm looking for a solution (with proof) that works all the time.

Perhaps it takes IE longer to figure out that it needs to display a favicon? IE takes forever to render plain HTML and run Javascript, so...

I've cleared the bookamark, cache, history, and cookies a dozen times and it still won't show up on the index page - but shows up fine on the other four pages. :/
I have two other websites and those favicons show up fine on all the pages (including the index pages) using the same process and coding. What could the problem on this one page be??????? Why does it not show on this one sites index.html page?

Unknown author (2009-04-05 20:02:15): Sorry, but I don't feel like registering.
Please check out the (draft) standard for "favicon" at the W3C site ("How to Add a Favicon to your Site"). The current HTML standard and XHTML standard are somewhat different from what things have been. Also note that since the standard itself is not actually a standard yet (it's in draft), things may change again (but I doubt the "link" tag will change much, if at all from what you see below), but it makes my description of this below a little complicated.
HTML: <head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile"> <link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="http://example.com/myicon.png">
XHTML: <head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile"> <link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/somewhere/myicon.png"/>
Note that the W3C states that the "profile" attribute and value as shown in the "head" tag should be added as shown for the purpose of properly defining the meaning "icon" value of the "rel" attribute. However, it is my opinion (professionally, I'm a computer programmer and a website designer/coder) that at this time the use of the "profile" attribute is completely superfluous. (I say this, because if you look at the profile that the W3C gives as an example, it seems to provide nothing at all in terms of giving information to a browser that the browser would use to know what to do. The one I'm seeing as I write this seems purely for human reading.)
In the "link" tags above, the "rel" attribute is simply "icon", not "shortcut icon". (In fact, the format of the value "shortcut icon" is bad - contrary to current standards - because it has a space in it, and in current standard the space is a delimiter, so "shortcut icon" would be referring to two different link types, one called "shortcut" and another one called "icon".)
The "type" and "href" attribute values are examples, but note that only the following three values are allowed values for "type" (corresponding to the MIME types of the allowed image formats of the icon file):
type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon" type="image/gif" type="image/png"
Note that previously "image/x-icon" was used, because it was an unregistered MIME type - unregistered, meaning that Microsoft had never registered that image file format type officially with the organization, IANA, where all MIME types are officially established. But that particular image format is now registered, so from now on you should use "image/vnd.microsoft.icon" for that type. (Note also that a lot of web server software does not have the new MIME type for ICO files configured, so they will ignore what you've specified anyway, and send it as "text/html" or "text/plain" - which is what they do for every type you specify for anything that the server is not configured to recognize as a valid MIME type.)
This means that you can now make the icon in either the up-until-now typical ICO format, or you can also make it either a GIF file or a PNG file. But remember that whatever format you choose to put the image file in, you must still comply with using a geometry of 16x16 or 32x32 pixels, and either an 8-bit or 24-bit color depth. (Obviously, if you make a GIF, then you can't have 24-bit color; however, a GIF file allows for animation if you want to use it.)
The reason I'm writing about this is because I just recently had occasion to want to use the "favicon" with a web site, which I've never done before, and googling around and digging up relevant information I've been studying this. (I also just updated the Wikipedia article on the subject, which is how I ended up here in fact from the link to this page that is at the bottom of the Wikipedia article.)

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://iphone.jomra.com/favicon.ico"> = Didn't show up
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="//wwwjomra.com/iphone/favicon.ico"> = WORKED on IE7 and Firefox!!
Ensure you clear you cache when trying.
Good luck, Redouane

Unknown author (2009-06-23 10:34:25): Yep Worked a treat although for some reason I only added my file as favicon.gif ( Animated ) then linked to it <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.gif"> And it played the animated one in Firefox and just played a static one in IE ... Cleared everything and tried on three different pc's . Go figure ( IE 7 and firefox 2.2 to 3.011 )
Unknown author (2009-08-20 22:20:06): How do I add a custom favicon to a favorite in Chrome? I used to be able to assign my own favicons to links in IE, but I don't see that in Chrome...
lubber123 (2009-09-04 20:17:54): My favicon at www.lfmi.org still doesn't show up on IE7 - I followed all your instructions. Anything I should know about 7?

Unknown author (2009-09-15 20:52:06): in IE7 u should ad the attribute type="image/x-icon" in the link tag
e.g.
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
Unknown author (2009-09-25 22:28:49): I needed to add my favicon.ico to my ...root\images\ folder (not root server folder as specified) in order to work.
Unknown author (2009-09-28 08:06:12): Yes, I had it working in Firefox with it in root folder but wouldn't work in IE7 so put in root/images folder and works on both Firefox and IE7 now. Thanks.

Unknown author (2009-11-19 21:00:41): To the person that responded to my question above through the form in the schwartzgroup.net's website: It is an .ico file and the root folder is http://www. I'm a web developer, not the owner of the website. I've tried all the tricks in the book, but to no avail. Got any other tips? I appreciate your help, but next time please reply through the forum and not through my client's website. Thanks!
