rahil23 (2005-10-15): http://www.braintoneinfo.com/
i am not able to see the fav icon in IE and also only in the tabbed heading in firefox
please help me

Vlasta (2005-10-15): I have checked your site and the favicon is showing without problems in both IE and Firefox on my computer. Did you try all the hints given above? Especially adding the page to favorites and clearing IE cache before.

Unknown author (2005-10-17): Hi,
I have performed all the steps regarding the FAVICON to be displayed in the IE. But it is not getting displayed.

Vlasta (2005-10-17): Well, your web site is OK, the problem is with your computer. Here are some more extreme recommendations: change your default browser to IE, delete all bookmarks to your site, clear IE cache, history folder, and recycle bin, restart computer, bookmark your page and then click a few times on the bookmark.

Unknown author (2005-11-02): This Favicon things is quite silly on internet explorer.

One thing you can do, if you want the icon to be visible in your explorer, do like you do when you make a shortcut to a page on you desktop but drag the URL (or rather the little e-icon nex to the adress) to the internet explorer window itself so that it reloads the page.

Do that twice.

Suddenly the icon is visible.

Reloading alone does not cut it.

Considering that it was internet explorer that came up with this thing with an icon its really super-silly that it works fantasticly on Firefox...

Unknown author (2005-11-20): thanks so much

Unknown author (2005-11-27): Favicon can also be used in the latest Firefox to display a .gif file and hence a moving icon!

make sure you put in two of the favicon generators as follows:
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon2.ICO">
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon.gif">
IE selects the .ico file and firefox displays the moving.gif!

Unknown author (2005-11-27): see an example here:

Vlasta (2005-11-27): Thanks for the info about animated favicons.

geofgibson (2005-11-28): I can't get IE to show my favicon. It shows up in Safari and Firefox with no problem. I've tried the various steps recommended, but to no avail.
http://soundsurgeon.tv

geofgibson (2005-11-28): Of course, now that I've refreshed the page 2 dozen or so times, the favicon now shows up!
F^&*$^&&! windows...

Unknown author (2005-12-05): I wasn't aware of Fx being able to show gif instead of ico... good to know. Now if I can just figure out how to make my idea look good at such a small size I'm all set!

Laurent (2005-12-19): Sorry I did try all the paths above and read all the comments but still cant get it shown in ie in my website
http://www.accro-web.com
maybe it does show but not in my computer?
Can someone help me :) ?
thx in advance
Laurent

Vlasta (2005-12-20): Your favicon is a renamed BMP. While Firefox understands it, IE requires a real Windows icon.

Unknown author (2005-12-24): thanx a lot Vlasta, you seem to be right and I'll change it (in fact it's a renamed .png)

Unknown author (2006-01-02): ?

Unknown author (2006-01-02): This page was very helpful! I've been looking everywhere to find out how to get an 'icon'... (didn't even know what it was called!) but now I have one working... if only all browers showed the animated one!

Unknown author (2006-01-02): checkout crunkedout.com and see if you can see the animated one or the still one...

Vlasta (2006-01-02): Firefox show the animated one there

Unknown author (2006-01-05): Thanks alot, people like this make the web go around =)

tpkyteroo (2006-01-31): I can not get the link to work on my site and I do use Mozilla Firefox. I tried using an ico file and a gif file. I changed the href different ways and it still does not work. Could it be that the server that hosts my site needs to allow one to use this feature? This does not make sense to me, but I can't imagine what I could possibly be doing wrong. The java script console just gives me my css errors. Thanks!

tpkyteroo (2006-01-31): I got it to work by using the gif file with the full url address to the image. I realized that I tried the full url address with the ico file instead of the gif file. Either my host does not support ico files, or the program I used does not allow ico files to actually work in a trial version.

Thanks!!!!

sHasHaNk kuMAr (2006-02-16): my favicon doesn't seem to work either! do help me out some 1!
Thanx 4 support. >> Free Site problem probably

http://www.geocities.com/shashank8kumar

Vlasta (2006-02-17): You need to specify the icon in a top level frame, which probably is not under your control on geocities.

pharius (2006-05-05): Great guide! I made a favicon for my site and it works fine in Firefox and IE7 but not in IE6. I tried adding the page to favorites and it shows there but not in the address bar. I also deleted all of my temp internet files but still no luck. Do you have any other suggedtions?

Unknown author (2006-05-09): Hi, I added this text on my html page.. but IE7 still doesn't show the favicon.ico.

<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />

I'm running this locally,
I'm using apache 2.0 and PHP 4.4.2

Works great in Mozilla Firefox, Opera 8.54, Netscape 8.0.4. I also did all the things that you said.

Please help.. Thanks.

Vlasta (2006-05-09): Try using absolute path. For IE6, the icon should be in the webserver root (http://localhost/favicon.ico). Also, it could be incorrect icon format.

jbolton (2006-05-11): Hi, having no luck with favicon showing up in IE:

http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/test.shtml

Please help!
Thanks, J

The Pirate (2006-05-18): Hey - wow - i thought this one was gonna be the fix! \
But that damned little square still won't load ... i've included the code but its still not getting picked up (www.illfm.net) and the icon is in the top level and inside the main site folder.
Any more suggestions ?

nikko (2006-05-24): Even Google does not show its favicon in IE so what chance have we???

Unknown author (2006-05-26): nikko is right...
the favicon does not show in IE!
all fine with FF.
IE su**!

Unknown author (2006-06-01): Thanks for your suggestions on the installation of Favicon.
However, I tried all your fixes for IE and after much aggrevation I got the icon for your site and for my site to show both in the address line and in the bookmarks for IE v6. However, as soon as I close the IE browser and open it again I lose my icon, AND the favicon for your site in both the address line and the bookmarks.
Firefox, opera, and Netscape all took the favicon just fine.

Thanks,
Sharon Wood
Web Developer.

Unknown author (2006-06-29): For who can't display favicon on IE.
Try this:
Go to tools> internet options> advanced> navigation> activate personalized "favorite" menu.
I've tried this and it's working good now.
But still I have to add the page to favorites to display the favicon.
Good luck.

kathiek (2006-07-12): I have successfully posted a favicon at www.firstnemo.org - is there a way for it to show up in the Title bar at the top of the browser (and not just in the URL address bar)? I tried to add an image tag as part of the title but that didn't work.

Vlasta (2006-07-12): AFAIK it is not possible with current browsers.

MrBernard (2006-07-18): It seems to me that IE 6 only adds favicon for bookmarked pages. So if your site is dynamic then one would have to add bookmarks for all pages... You can easily test this with for instance Wikipedia. Firefox works like a dream...

Unknown author (2006-08-03): mine shows up in my favorites.. it has both the 16x16 and a 32x32 in the ico file... shows in fav list and when browsing the fav folder it shows the big one... but does not show in the address bar... winxp, ie6

Unknown author (2006-10-05): To get this to work with IE 6, make sure a 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 in the ico file. I tried all kinds of tricks to get it to show, but that was the only thing that worked.

Unknown author (2006-10-11): it's fine

sbmkrishna (2006-10-18): My IE browser is not showing the favicon.ico. If i open like www.softcrylic.com/favicon.ico, the browser is not showing the icon. I even tried Go to tools> internet options> advanced> navigation> activate personalized "favorite" menu. But its not working. I think if i can dispaly that icon in the browser, then it works in the address bar. So please help me what should i do to display that icon in the browser

Vlasta (2006-10-18): Your favicon is a PNG image, not a real icon. While Firefox accepts any image format, you need a proper .ico file for IE.

sisam (2006-10-21): I tried everything suggested above to see the favicon in IE but it is not working. www.nazaydemir.com is the website... it is working perfectly in firefox....

Unknown author (2006-10-22): I tryed the code but supose doenst work whitout a webpage

Unknown author (2006-10-27): I am trying to add a favicon to my site, but I want to test it first to make sure that it works. Does this code work - <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico"> or do I need to direct it to my site somewhere for example <link rel="shortcut icon" href="www.example.com/images/favicon.ico">

Vlasta (2006-10-29): The first version is correct. If you want your favicon to be shown in IE6, it must be in the root of your site and called exactly favicon.ico

Dave (2006-10-30): Thank you for responding Vlasta but it is still not working, <link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/favicon.ico"> I have it 16x16 the correct code, not sure what to do from here, any suggestions?

Vlasta (2006-10-30): You should use absolute path - that is including the leading slash. And you should place it to the root directory, not to any subdirectory. Otherwise it would not work with IE6. Other than that, I would suggest to read the previous comments.

SeattleRetro (2006-11-11): Just want to say thanks for your site--I was able to get the icon working for IE6 finally.
For those who have Photoshop, there was a free plug-in to do .ico files. I used the 16x16 size.
And I notice here on this site you used a relative (vs. absolute) placement for your .ico file--and sure enough, it shows in Firefox, but not in IE6!

manzanofab (2006-11-21): Hi my name is fabian i dont know what happen with the ie my favicon.ico is in the root file, and it works with the opera but it does not work in the ie what could be the problem,
i made the favicon in fireworks and in dreamweaver i change the .jpg to .ico
i dont know if this could be the problem
please heeeellllppp me
thanks

Vlasta (2006-11-22): Favicon should (and in case of IE must) be an .ico file. It is not enough to rename a .jpg to .ico.

Unknown author (2006-11-26): Wow

Girish (2006-11-29): I had added the give statement in the head section of my web page. It is working all fine in Mozilla but not working on Internet Explorer. Though I have IE6 but it is not working. I had also tried to add the page as favourite but still it is showing the IE icon

Vlasta (2006-11-30): There are more hints in the comment section, but usually this kind of problem is caused by slow refresh of IE.

DiverFrank (2006-12-02): Hi
After creating my favicon and following your instructions it still does not appear. Our home page uses frames and I have inserted the line of code in the frames page and also both pages that are shown in the frames any suggestions?

Vlasta (2006-12-02): I have checked your site and it seems that you have not uploaded the favicon ;-). It should be accessible at www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico

DiverFrank (2006-12-03): Hi
The icon file had the extension in upper case, forgot that Linux is case sensitive, the favicon is however still not coming up when I open internet explorer (version 7) any more help would be appreciated
Thanks

Vlasta (2006-12-04): Works all right from my computer in both IE6 and IE7. One minor thing - your icon is 32x32 pixels, you should add a 16x16 format.

TomasV (2006-12-04): I can't get this working again using IE7. Firefox is all good. ico created using photoshop plug-in. 16x16pix 400bytes.
www.martinassociates.co.uk

Vlasta (2006-12-05): use rel="shortcut icon", not just rel="icon" and use absolute path to the icon ... href="/favicon.ico" <- just like in the example in the article

Unknown author (2006-12-07): My icon is not showing. Any help would be appreciated. It shows in Mozilla no problem, but not in any version of IE. The URL is http://tesolarabia.org

Vlasta (2006-12-07): Works all right from here.

Unknown author (2006-12-09): My icon is not showing up www.bikini2990.net

dasadler (2006-12-10): I think I have done everything right yet the favicon does not appear. At least not for me. Anyone else see it? http://appliedintegrity.us

Vlasta (2006-12-10): both bikini2990.net and appliedintegrity.us favicons show without problems from here.

blakenewman-com (2006-12-10): It works when I type blakenewman.com but does not when I type www.blakenewman.com. Is that a matter of my cache or my temporary internet files?

Vlasta (2006-12-10): works for both addresses for me, BUT: favicon should be 16x16 pixels - yours has all but this format and a file length of over 350kB!

Vivid (2006-12-18): www.vividbroadcast.co.uk has an icon that works fine in anything but IE. in IE6 it appears in the favorites when added but not in the URL bar.

Vlasta (2006-12-19): After you add it to favorites in IE6 and click on that link in favorites, it will show in address bar. But only for that single page.

UKuser (2006-12-19): Hi. Done all you have said and I can't seem to view the favicon? My URL is www.directsubmit.co.uk Any ideas?

Unknown author (2006-12-19): I have tried everything, works in every browser on every system but IE 7...arg... www.advantageofficesuites.com

Unknown author (2006-12-19): I can't seem to get my favicon to view on the page. I use IE 7 and the page is alchristian.com Any help would be appreciated.

Vlasta (2006-12-20): www.directsubmit.co.uk and www.advantageofficesuites.com work without problems. Favicon at alchristian.com should only contain 16x16 pixel images.

Unknown author (2006-12-20): I can't get it to work either. Does favicon show up for you in www.patong.biz?

Unknown author (2006-12-21): hi,
well my favicon working on mozila(2.0) and not work on IE(6.0)

Regards,
Minhajkk

Wheatworks (2006-12-27): I find it actually takes two lines in the page headers to make a favicon work well across all browsers:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.wheatworks.com/favicon.ico">
<link rel="icon" type="image/ico" href="http://www.wheatworks.com/favicon.ico">

Perhaps this will help those with problems in certain browsers.

Rick Wheat
www.wheatworks.com

Unknown author (2006-12-27): Mine won't work on IE 7.0

GoldDog (2006-12-30): Wheatworks, I added your extra tag, but IE 6 still continues to ignore my favicon. Any other workarounds exist for IE?

Vlasta (2006-12-31): The two lines are not necessary unless you want to use different favicons in IE and Firefox. The rel="icon" line is ignored by IE and only affects Firefox.
If you are having problems in IE6, check you page from another computer. It is usually only a caching issue.

Unknown author (2007-01-02): I am using IE6. I tried all above said tricks. But the icon is showing in Favorites list only and not in Address Bar. It is working find in Firefox.
Plz reply.
sbhutani.tech@gmail.com

Unknown author (2007-01-05): I am using IE7. I tried all the above tricks mentioned and still I can’t see Favicon in the address bar. It is working find in Fire fox.

Can you help me with this?

Melusine (2007-01-09): I am in the same situation. Have tried for a while now to get IE7.0 to show the favicon on my site but no luck. Also went through all the steps mentioned above - no change. Any other suggestions? This is driving me nuts...

RSC (2007-01-09): It works fine with Firefox. Can't get to work with MS

Melusine (2007-01-09): Not the answer I had hoped for :-( Especially since all other websites show up with the favicon, just my own is not working regardless of what I do.

Vlasta (2007-01-10): People, its kind of hard to help you unless you also include the url of your sites ;-).

Unknown author (2007-01-11): Tiffani=Can you add a favicon to your myspace page?

Vlasta (2007-01-11): I am not sure, I do not have a MySpace account. It should be possible if you can modify the page header.

zonda (2007-01-11): i have tried to get my favicon to work in IE7 but can't any ideas? Works fine in Firefox

RSC (2007-01-12): One that works with Firefox and NetScape
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/animated_favicon1.gif">
Some of the ones I've tried with MS IE6 without any luck
The file facicon.ico is in the root path
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />
or
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico">
or
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.web-site/favicon.ico">
There were a couple other things I found and tried with no luck

Unknown author (2007-01-12): Yet another case of works in FF, not in IE (only tried IE 6). URL...

http://development.web.bareescentuals.demandware.net/on/demandware.store/Sites-BareMinerals-Site

you can open: http://development.web.bareescentuals.demandware.net/favicon.ico

Tried the provided suggestions, but no joy. Maybe someone from MS will visit this site and tell us all what we're doing wrong?

Vlasta (2007-01-13): The icon file is OK, but it does not show from my computer either. Did you try to use "/favicon.ico" instead of referencing a different domain?

mike (2007-01-17): I've added a favicon to my web page and it displays in the favorities but not in the address bar. I'm using IE7 is there something I'm not doing?

Tysonjm (2007-01-19): How come favicons work in IE7 for sites like www.bankofamerica.com or clickforlessons.com, since when you view their source code, there's no refernce to the <link rel= ... method? I'm confused; how are they doing it? :0 I'm unable to get it to work for www.icedpitamusiclessons.com by the way. :(

Vlasta (2007-01-19): Sometimes browsers just use for favicon.ico from the root directory. And your site works OK.

Tysonjm (2007-01-19): Sorry, not sure why my previous post reposted itself. Funny, you're seeing my site work OK with the favicon. I've tried it on 5 computers now with different versions of IE to no avail. Very strange!

Vlasta (2007-01-20): I have opened it in IE6, added to bookmarks and favicon appeared... Then after a click on the bookmark it also showed in address bar as it should.

Tysonjm (2007-01-21): Thanks, I did finally get IE6 to work only after adding to bookmarks. IE7 still doesn't, however. I still wonder though how these sites do it, that I've never been to before, much less bookmarked. Like yours, it loaded upon my first visit in IE7! Why's it work?

Tysonjm (2007-01-21): Fixed it by adding: type="image/x-icon" to the line. So, <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">

Unknown author (2007-01-21): ADI I have tried this line at IE7 and it didn’t work…

Unknown author (2007-01-23): me using https protocol is there any problem with https for displaying favicon.

regards,
Minhajkk

mickapoos (2007-01-27): I have followed the directions, my website is www.find-my-plane.com and the favicon isn't displaying. Thank you

Vlasta (2007-01-28): Looks OK form here in Firefox and IE6. One note though - you are missing the closing ">" on some of your meta tags.

paradox (2007-01-30): http://www.juancolebeta2.com/

The favicon never sticks with IE 7 on this site. I've tried all the different tags, just nothing, all is well in Mozialla. It creases me, I duplictaed everything here perfectly, cleared the cache, used and absolute url, modidifed the tag from above, added the (space)/> at the end of the tag for xhtml, still nothing. Any ideas?

Vlasta (2007-01-31): The problem is in your favicon.ico file - it is a renamed gif image and IE requires a real .ico format.

paradox (2007-01-31): Thank you so much, I appreciate it. I apologize for the triple comment post, I didn't realize a refresh was re-posting.

Again, bless you for the answer. Thank you.

paradox (2007-01-31): I am not really sure what a "real" ico format is, other than re-naming it. Photoshop doesn't recognize ico files, and I could only work with the jpg that was given to me.

Okay, unclear on the concept, it's not exactly a new experience for me in this life. Go to those sites that generate this ico file for you, since you can't do it. I did. I replaced it on the server twice and it still won't show in IE.

In interviewing for a Manager job so I can flee IE. It's not worth it in this life. Anything further you can suggest, thank you very much, I'm not stressing. It's a bona fide ico on the root, still klunks.

Vlasta (2007-01-31): I have checked the site from IE6 and it seems to work fine. It is probably just a caching issue on your computer.

gf (2007-02-01): Sharan: Hi, as discussed in the forum,

I added the favicon.ico in to my Tomcat web server (ROOT Folder). Is this enough to make the favicon work for all the pages?

My requirement is to have the little icon on the address bar without bookmarking the page. We cannot request the user to bookmark to see our company icon. How do I force this to happen with out bookmark? Our application has around 50 jsp files. Should I had <LINK> element in all the jsp files. Please help me out. Thanks, Sharan.

pc (2007-02-01): Hi,
the icon just won't show up in front of the address for IE7. It does on Firefox and Safari. But none of them displayed the icons when I saved them as favorite or saved it as shortcut on my desktop. Can you please help me out? www.apcommerce.net
Thanks!
Patricia

Vlasta (2007-02-01):
Sharan: you should add the <link ... - it does not maater what technology you use on the server. And for IE6 susers must add the page to favorites, for other browsers, the icon shows just by visiting the page.

Patricia: Your favicon works in IE7, it just takes a more time to display, because there is relatively lot of data on your page.

Unknown author (2007-02-02): I tried all the directions to display it for IE but i cannot get it to display. I can however get it in firefox and opera. Can you help. www.pay4rent.com

Unknown author (2007-02-03): ok, can anyone help me here? Tried all these suggestions, but am using joomla in combo with a one-fits-all template. Got so many index.htm, index.phps all over, I'm just lost. Favicon works in Firefox... here it ain't. http://blakesands.com Thanks.

Vlasta (2007-02-03): pay4rent:
yout .ico file is relly a renamed .jpg - you need a real .ico format
blakesnads: put your favicon to the root directory

Unknown author (2007-02-04): hey, this is the blakesands.com poster again. Favicon is everywhere, including the root, but joomla has a special config for it, and wants it in the /images/ folder. And, TA-DA! It works for me, and I hope for you too. AGAIN, I concur... it is first a file location issue AND also a cache problem. Also, adding it to favs seems to help the icon show correctly. Thanks all for your help. I spent hours on this, only to discover from another computer that favicon shows just fine in IE on the first try.

Unknown author (2007-02-04): blakesands.com poster, again, here... another interesting fact. IE ignores any icon that is not 16x16 and in official ico format. Search for a free icon editor if you need to adjust size, there are lots of free and trial ico editors out there.

Unknown author (2007-02-05): the favicon still not showing in IE 5, 6 and 7... I tried evey thing! my web site is arabimages.com

Best,

Sam

Vlasta (2007-02-05): No wonder, your html is a big mess. There are at least two </head> tags on your page.

Choakster (2007-02-07): paradox (2007-01-31): "Photoshop doesn't recognize ico files"
As an FYI to those who use Photoshop. There is a free plugin that will add ico support which can be found at.
http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/

Good Luck,
Choakster

sonny.tee (2007-02-08): Hi, I feel that i've added the favicon.ico tag correctly:

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
www.fordpas.org - the icon shows up in FireFox and Safari, but not in IE 6 nor 7. Do i just need to wait a bit?

I've gone over all these forums and cant find the answer. I generated the Icon using an Icon generator and it looks good in those other browers, but most of our people use IE.

Thanks a lot!
Son

Vlasta (2007-02-09): looks OK from here in both IE6 and IE7

Unknown author (2007-02-11): i have tried all the steps to show icon for my page but still it doesn't show up.

HardHead (2007-02-16): Mine worked Great!!!! thank you folks for all the help :)

HardHead (2007-02-16): I have one question..How can I use this on a php site that has no html intro?

HardHead (2007-02-16): Sonny Tee I see the Icon just fine on your site. Looks Good

Vlasta (2007-02-16): There should be no problem with php. Php, like all similar technologies, just produce html code. But, of course, you have to find the right place in the script you are using.

HardHead (2007-02-16): LOL yea so I see but everything I have tried hasnt worked.. But I'll keep trying

Unknown author (2007-02-21): firefox used to display favicons just fine until the latest version (2.0.0.1) - then they showed up from other sites, but not mine, until I added the "shortcut icon" tag in the headers. Strange, because firefox never needed that before as long as favicon.ico was in the root web directory.

Unknown author (2007-02-23): I have tried everything I know to put this on php but nothing works Help!!!!!!!!

Unknown author (2007-02-24): same problem as with sonny.tee...........

Mozilla Firefox n all those "good" browsers work great in showing the icons.....but IE7 juzz blatantly refuses to show it.......

all others find the icons even if I place it in subfolders n give the appropriate path..........

Unknown author (2007-02-25): Got it to work fine. THANKS !!!

Unknown author (2007-02-27): How do you integrate this with Wordpress (the platform, not the .com)?

Unknown author (2007-03-12): I can not even see the favicons of Microsoft, Google, etc...
Can anybody suggest anything? Maybe in the security settings of ie?...

Curious (2007-03-13): I had have problem in displaying favicon on IE7 using all the tips mentioned online. Finally, I realise it works only by adding <body> .. </body> in my test page. I have a bad habit to ignore these tags.

Vlasta (2007-03-25): use the html code stated in this article and use a real .icon file, not renamed jpeg

Unknown author (2007-03-26): <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico">
its working with FF and IE7 automatically but not automatically working with IE6

bombo (2007-04-02): I put the link as stated above, I've tried everything but the icon is not showing at all, I'm using IE7 and dreamweaver. I don't know why its not working, I've also deleted temp files but still the same, I don't usually have problems seeing changes made to the website, Please advise if I've missed anything, thanx

Vlasta (2007-04-02): Hard to tell without the url of your site.

bombo (2007-04-02): sorry this thing sent the same message again... here's the url >> http://kasturirestaurant.com , I'm also trying to put it on my other site too... thanx for the response..

bombo (2007-04-02): I refreshed this page that's why it sent the same message back... very sorry for that... so ppl do not refresh page after sending comments... :P

bombo (2007-04-02): OK, I think I done it, the file although on my pc is 16 x 16 , for some reason it was showing as 48 x 48 on the server... I removed it all and tried again, seemed to have sorted the problem for now, I also think it only lets a genuine ico file work better than a transformed gif or jpeg

Unknown author (2007-04-04): Your favicon doesn't work in IE6.

MiG (2007-04-04): I tried to put favicon icon on one site but it doesn't work. I tried everything and I don't know where I'm wrong!?! The site url is http://www.inet.hr/~vjezic
I've placed icon file in the root folder.

Vlasta (2007-04-04): No, you icon is not in root folder, but actually in /~vjezic folder. I know that for you it seems to be a root folder, but for browsers, it is not, the root folder would be http://www.inet.hr/

Unknown author (2007-04-05): not working in firefox or ie7 on mine

Unknown author (2007-04-05): oops icon in wrong place, www.inplainview.co.uk working now

Unknown author (2007-04-10): not working in ie7, www.greatdesigns4u.us

Vlasta (2007-04-11): Your favicon is a renamed .gif. You need a real icon for IE.

Unknown author (2007-04-12): Urm....this is embarrassing !!!!!!!!!
I just commissioned a script so viewers can go to:-
http://www.favicon.co.uk and make a favicon.ico file from
any image that they have on their computer
The script is supposed to convert the image they supply
into a favicon.ico file
In early stage of design BUT http://www.favicon.co.uk/new.html
has the necessary code and the favicon.ico file is uploaded
but....guess what...I can't see it in my favourites
I tried all the advice offered by Googling "favicon don't show"
and from this page...to no avail
Any further advice appreciated.
Secondly can somebody try the script and let me know if it works
for them (after uploading and bookmarking to your own site)
You could mail me stay[at]canastahotel.com
Thanks in advance for any useful comments

Unknown author (2007-04-12): Problem fixed - it was actually a problem with the script and the way it formatted the favicon.ico image - now corrected.
If anybody wants to try it out please go to: http://www.favicon.co.uk
to design your own favicon.ico file

WillowsHeart (2007-05-06): Hi I'm hoping you can help as I'm rather perplexed! I created a favicon, uploaded it to my root folder, inserted the link into my main index page (as in example on this page) but the icon is only showing against my 'forum' page and not the others. I can't work out why it's showing on that one page when it's not even the page I inserted the link. I'm getting really frustrated now so any help will be greatly appreciated :-) Thanks

Vlasta (2007-05-06): It depends on the browser you are using. Sometimes it is enough to have favicon.ico in root folder for the icon to appear, sometimes the browser does not fetch the icon, because it already has the default one cached for that page.

WillowsHeart (2007-05-06): I cleared my cache and hey presto its working . . thanks for your help :-)

Unknown author (2007-05-10): i am still not able to view icon in address bar

Unknown author (2007-05-19): www.cariboopg.ca Works in FF not in IE7

mjarx (2007-06-08): I got it working but when i tried to change the design by overwriting the file & clearing the cache, the old design shows up.

mjarx (2007-06-16): Icon was being displayed, now it's not. Any tips?

Vlasta (2007-06-16): If you did not change anything then probably the cached icon on your computer was updated or dropped. Re-add it to your favorites if your are using IE6.

Unknown author (2007-06-26): Hi, www.eyeonbooks.com.au seems to work in FF but not in IE7? Can you please have a look?

Vlasta (2007-06-26): Works OK in my IE7, it will be just caching issue on your computer.

Shohreh (2007-07-10): I cannot get the fav icon to show up on Internet Explorer. Please check my site http://www.egoldfilledjewelry.com and tell me what I am doing wrong.

Vlasta (2007-07-10): Looks OK from here, probably just not updated cache on your computer. But you should remove the 32x32 pixel format from your favicon or at least make it similar to the 16x16 format.

Unknown author (2007-07-11): trying IE 7 at newreflectionscounseling.com and cannot get it to display. Have tried all suggestions. I can see rw-designer.com's favicon and other sites, but not mine. Any ideas?

Vlasta (2007-07-11): Uhm, I cannot find the <link rel="... tag in your page.

Chris L (2007-07-11): I have a frames based website does the <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico"> go in the index.htm, thanks

Vlasta (2007-07-11): Yes, to the top level page, that defines the frames.

Chris L (2007-07-12): Many thanks for that, but it still does not want to work. I used one of your icons. It being the letter "W" Could you try it your end in case its the cache thing. Its www.woodleynet.co.uk. Cheers

Vlasta (2007-07-12): That page seems to redirect to geocities. That will be a problem for IE6, because you cannot put the icon to the root folder of a site.

Unknown author (2007-07-16): Hi I cannot see the fav icon that has been added to my website in ie .. it works fine in firefox... i have tried numerous times.. can you please help.

Unknown author (2007-07-16): woops would be good to give you the web address - http://www.zesthealthcare.com.au

Vlasta (2007-07-17): You should put the favicon to the root folder. Also, it is better if it si 16x16 pixels.

Unknown author (2007-07-18): worked for me using the free icon generator and a gif file - thanks for the instructions

Unknown author (2007-07-20): enjoying your site...i already had the "<link rel..." already in place with the addition of "type="image/x-icon". As soon as i copied my newly made icon out there it worked great in firefox. no luck in IE 6 or 7 yet despite deleting cached information and favorites. the site is www.navini.com

Vlasta (2007-07-20): ... no problems in my IE7

Unknown author (2007-07-20): just an interesting note, i changed the file name and code from favicon.ico to navini.ico and it worked immediately in IE7. something was evidently cached somewhere. in any case, if i learn anything fun i'll share it.

Unknown author (2007-07-24): Good call on the renaming the icon, that worked for me too and is a tip that's probably worth adding to the list above.

jfairbanks (2007-07-25): I tried adding a favicon to my website www.cornerstonesservices.com I made the 16X16 favicon and placed it in the root directory--and linked it appropriately (I think) but it still does not show in IE7 though it works fine in Firefox. Any suggestions?

Unknown author (2007-08-03): I can't get my favicon to display in either IE 6 or 7...works fine in Firefox though. ???

harry_the_icon (2007-08-09): Tried the renaming and it worked for me, after I'd spent ages cutting and pasting, assuming I was an idiot. Well done, one step closer to looking professional:

Dave (2007-08-10): Downloaded trial version but all the favicons I tried to create ended up 25k. Used the online version & it worked great (<2k). Found advice true: Comes up great in Mozilla; a struggle to get it to come up in IEv6 or v7.

Vlasta (2007-08-10): The online tool is good for favicons, the normal editor gives more freedom (you can for example create favicons with transparency and smooth edges). You should delete all but 16x16 images when using it for favicons.

Unknown author (2007-08-10): Tried all the suggestions above, but still can't get the icon appearing in IE 7. Works in Firefox and IE6.

Osaka Slim (2007-11-03): Last week I was tasked to "freshen up" my company's Web site. I thought this would be a great chance to learn how to put an
icon next to the address bar--something I'd wanted to do for my personal site for ages. So I checked out a few sites like this
one and soon had my company logo into a favicon file and the relevant code in the index file. I didn't want a lone graphic floating about in the root directory so put the .ico file in /graphics and added that path to the href. Worked beautifully in Opera 9.24 (my browser of choice) right off. Then I tried it in IE6. Didn't work. Firefox 1 (I keep it for testing new scripts!)--no problem. A search on "favicon in IE6" brought me here.
Now I can't be experimenting with my live company site so I switched to my personal one, which is hosted on GeoCities. I got the same result as above. First I tried moving the favicon file into the same directory as the index (and edited the href). Still no good for IE6. Then I tried everything suggested above--including the reboot! I found the source in Vlasta's site (I warmed my nose before sniffing
around!) and copied the link rel line from there. Still no good for IE6, and I agree with milongal, the "/" stopped it from working
in Opera and Firefox. The "type" (with "image/x-icon" or "image/vnd.microsoft.icon" recomended by Wikipedia) didn't help.
Then I noticed something weird in Opera and Firefox. Even though my icon shows up next to the address bar, when I bookmark my site, the icon appearing in Bookmarks is totally different to mine and nothing I recognise! Is this is because I'm on a hosted site--GeoCities are forcing an arbitrary icon of their choice on my bookmark? I checked a few other sites and all the ones that look the same next to the address bar and in bookmarks appear to have their own servers (or at least domain names) and use the simplest form of the "link" declaration.
I'm stuck and have given up for now. I've now spent more than 10 times the amount of time trying to get this to work in IE6 than it took to do in the first place! My boss and just about everyone else in my company are IE devotees so I guess no-one's going to see my work!
Sorry this has gone on too long--any helpful advice on my comments would be welcome!

Unknown author (2007-11-11): A solution I found was to add in the ref link the whole url address with a question mark at the end, that will tell the server to look for any change in the file everytime your page loads, that worked for me, good luck!!

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="www.website.com/favicon.ico?">

Unknown author (2007-11-17): I found that I had to rename my favicon to favicon1, change the code to say <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon1.ico">. That was the only way I could get it to work.

Unknown author (2007-11-17): Clearing the cache, deleting history, removing cookies, restarting IE7 - none of it worked.

What DID work was adding the question mark, as the UA post of 11/11/07 suggests. Works like a charm!

Thanks for response, i stores my files which needs for this site(html, jsp, servlets,...), within the public_html folder in FTP. The server also detects the files from public_html.

Unknown author (2008-04-22): Hi There

I have tried everything to make my fav icon come up on IE 6. But no luck. I have provided a hard coded path to the icon file in my Header control, added as bookmark etc after clearing previous bookmarks, Temp files etc but no luck. I noticed that when I browse to my icon file through IE and look at its properties - it shows Type: "Not Available". Is this causing the issue? Why is that? When I go to the icon file through file structure on the server and go properties - it shows it as a 16x16 .ico file. Please help. Thanks. Jatin

Unknown author (2008-04-22): My site experttitsolutions.biz also has the same problem of not dispalying Icon. Please suggest.

TPTech

Vlasta (2008-04-22): experttitsolutions.biz seems to be offline. As for the IE6 problem, make sure, the favicon.ico is really an .ico file, not just renamed .bmp, it is in the root folder and called exactly favicon.ico. You may aslo check it mime type if it is not something weird. With IE6, it is often a cache issue, try a clean computer, add your page to favorites and click it.

Unknown author (2008-04-22): I use IE and have tried everything to get it to show.
Any other ideas?

Vlasta (2008-04-23): Hard to tell. If you have tried everything, there is not much left ;-).
