The preview actually does this, but the size limit at which it starts to reduce the image size is still too big for scripted operations.

Is there any way to get the preview to use an image that is only half, quarter, whatever, the size of the original image?
Its just that then for the slow scripts you could still get a good idea of what its going to look like without waiting so long.
The Kaleidoscope for instance shows a near same sample of what its going to be like if the image is first scaled down.
