Cannot create an icon with transparent a background.

Trying to create an .icns icon for Mac OS X.

NO matter what I do, the icon background which is transparent on the image and transparent in the icon editor is always saved as black.

Clearly I"m missing something. And I've been a computer pro since 1961!

My embarrassment is not important. Tell me what to do?

In what situation is it shown black?
