Vector image

Vector image is an image stored by a computer in a specific way. Sharp edges, simple colors without texturing are typical characteristics of a vector image.

Vector images are composed of geometric shapes. Only predefined shapes are allowed in a vector image and the amount and type of allowed shapes depends on the actual vector image format used. Usually, shapes like ellipses, rectangles, lines, curves, text, or regions with curved outlines are allowed. Similarly, the colors or patterns used to paint the shapes may be limited by the actual vector format.

A vector image - note that the zoomed-in region is smooth.

Vector images can be modified by changing colors, sizes or other properties of individual shapes.

Vector images may usually be freely rescaled without losing sharpness (unless a raster pattern is used to paint a shape).
