Cursor Hot Spot

When you select something with a traditional mouse cursor, it will only detect that you are selecting it when the point/tip of the cursor is within the object. Mouse cursors usually show you this point easily, where on a traditional mouse cursor, the point is on the tip of the triangular shape. On other cursors not typically meant for selections (such as busy or resizing cursors), this spot is usually found on the center of the cursor's image.

We call this "point" of the cursor the hot spot. The hot spot determines where on the cursor should it select objects or other things on a computer interface. The placement of a hot spot is an important part of a mouse cursor. It should be relative to the design of the cursor, so users can look at the design of the cursor and immediately know where it's hot spot should be.

This cursor's hot spot is on the tip of the upper triangle-like shape. Triangular-style shapes like these help set a good spot for the hot spot, thus making these shapes the traditional style of a mouse cursor. This cursor's hot spot is on the top of the pointer finger. This cursor's hot spot is on the center of the cursor.
The hot spots of these cursors are indicated by the grey crosshair.

How to Change the Hot Spot?

If you have a cursor file open in RealWorld Cursor Editor, select the hotspot tool. The hot spot will be shown as a green dot when you hover over the canvas. Click on a pixel to mark it as the hot spot.

You may also set the hot spot's x, y location in the Frame Properties section.
The tool will only apply the hot spot for the currently selected frame. If you are working with an animated cursor, you may need to use the hot spot tool in each frame individually if you are placing the hot spot in different areas in each frame.

Alternatively, the hot spot can be changed by dragging the preview over the cross hair. If the preview is animated, the dragging moves the hot spot for every frame.

You can also change the hot spot right from your uploaded cursor's page. Simply go to the cursor's page and click Edit hotspot located by the included cursor sizes.

The cursor's sizes and (if animated) it's frames should show up. You are able to change a size/frame's hot spot by dragging the cursor over the cross hair. When Sync hotspots across frames is enabled, all of the frames within the size of the cursor you are changing the hot spot of will move along with your dragging, changing the hot spot across all of the frames. Otherwise, the hot spot will only apple to the singular frame.

It is very important that users pay attention to their hotspots before uploading their cursors to this site.
